Each month I write a column for Care Home Management Magazine. This month I wrote about what regular exercise can do for residents in care homes. Here's what I wrote:
Regular exercise has been proven to have a significant impact on both physical and mental health, beneficial as much for improving mobility and reducing falls as for combatting depression and managing the symptoms of dementia.
Since I launched Oomph! 4 years ago, we’ve trained many hundreds of staff in care homes to deliver our unique take on exercise for older adults. Here’s my top 5 tips that we’ve learnt over the years about how to make exercise work for you, your staff and your residents:
You can read more detail on many of these learnings, the impact of our work and case studies of care homes we’ve worked with in our latest Annual Report. Oomph! are delighted today to release our latest Annual Impact Report 2014/15.
This report covers the breadth and depth of social impact created by the hundreds of care home staff we have trained and supported to become Oomph! instructors up and down the country. Impact such as:
The report also includes a series of learnings about how to deeply embed regular exercise and meaningful activities into care settings and a wealth of case studies of individuals and organisations that have benefitted from our work.
People like Grace, 102, who won’t miss a single Oomph! class at her home Drayton Court - whereas previously, she wouldn’t come out of her room. After a month of attending Oomph! she was able to walk a short distance by herself and her attitude is far more positive. Her family are so pleased with the transformation whilst the manager at Drayton Court says: “I’ve been around a long time and I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s what we’ve always wanted in the home!”
Four years ago Ben Allen founded Oomph! to ensure care home residents across the country could regularly exercise in a way that was fun, affordable and where the impact can be really evidenced. Our Annual Impact Report, highlights that this dream has now become a reality and our partners can quantify the benefits to resident quality of life and home culture that their trained staff are creating every single day.
We’re humbled by the achievements of our instructors and the praise from people like Christine Asbury, CEO of WCS Care Group - who have trained Oomph! Instructors in every one of their homes – saying “We haven’t seen anything in living memory that has created such a positive response from people – residents, families and staff!”
You can read the entire Annual Impact Report here or email us firstname.lastname@example.org and we'll put a hard copy in the post.
