1959 ‘The Sound of Music’ Musical premieres in NYC

The Sound of Music premiered on Broadway in 1959, and it was an instant success. The musical told the story of Maria von Trapp, a nun who became the governess of the von Trapp family. The music was by Rodgers and Hammerstein, and the play won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
