1st weather satellite launched to measure cloud-cover (1959)

On the 17th of February 1959, the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory deployed Vanguard 2, the first weather satellite into space. The satellite is still in orbit today and is expected to continue to orbit for about 300 years.
