Alexander Fleming discovers penicillin (1928)

Penicillin was discovered by Scottish physician Alexander Fleming in 1928. While working at St Mary’s Hospital, he experimentally discovered that a Penicillium mould secretes an antibacterial substance, and was the first to concentrate the active substance involved, which he named penicillin in 1928.
