Billy the Kid, one of America’s most famous outlaws, was born on this day in 1859. The Kid, whose real name was William Henry McCarty Jr., was born in New York City to Irish immigrant parents. He grew up in a tough neighbourhood and had a reputation for being a troublemaker. As a teenager, he moved to the American West, where he became involved in crime. He eventually became a wanted man, with a $500 bounty on his head. The Kid was eventually killed by Sheriff Pat Garrett in 1881.
