Captain Webb Swims The English Channel (1875)

Captain Webb Swims The English Channel (1875)

Captain Matthew Webb first attempted to swim the channel on the 12th of August 1875, but unfortunately, very bad weather conditions meant that he had to turn around. Twelve days later he successfully completed the 40-mile swim in 21 hours and 40 minutes, despite multiple jellyfish stings and unusually strong currents! Webb was born in Shropshire in 1848 and taught himself to swim in the River Severn and enlisted as a merchant seaman at just 12 years old! Webb died trying to achieve another amazing feat when he drowned trying to swim the Niagra River.
