Disney Releases ‘Steamboat Willie’ (1929)
On the 18th November, 1929, Disney released its first ever fully synchronized sound cartoon, ‘Steamboat Willie.’ The film starred a caricature of American inventor and politician Benjamin Franklin as the titular character. The release of ‘Steamboat Willie’ was a watershed moment in the history of animation, as it proved that cartoons could be more than just silent moving images. The film was an instant success, and its iconic star, Mickey Mouse, would go on to become one of the most recognizable characters in the world.
