Engagement of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip (1947)

Engagement of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip (1947)

After meeting for only the second time at The Royal Navy College in Dartmouth, Queen Elizabeth, then only 13 years of age, fell in love with Prince Philip and they began regularly exchanging letters. Although they were young, many friends and family spoke about their commitment to each other and as early as 1941, when the Queen was 16, people began to speculate on a future engagement. In 1946, Prince Philip asked King George VI for his daughter’s hand in marriage, which was granted as long as they waited to publicly announce the upcoming nuptials after Queen Elizabeth had turned 21. Philip proposed to the future Queen with a 3 carat diamond ring made from a diamond from his mother’s beloved tiara.
