First Recorded Boxing Match (1681)

First Recorded Boxing Match (1681)

The first recorded boxing match took place in England in 1681, when Christopher Monck, 2nd Duke of Albemarle, sanctioned a bout between his butler and his butcher. Although there were no official rules, this fight effectively laid the foundations for boxing as we know it. The two men fought for more than an hour, and the bout was declared a draw. However, the Duke was so impressed by the spectacle that he decided to make boxing a regular event at his estate. From that point on, boxing became increasingly popular in England, and by the early 1800s, it had become a mainstream sport. Today, boxing is enjoyed by people all over the world, and it continues to grow in popularity. Thanks to the Duke of Albemarle, we now have one of the most popular sports in the world.
