First recorded boxing match (1681)

Boxing was a popular spectator sport in Ancient Rome however the first recorded boxing match was in 1681 in England. This was known as a bare knuckle fight which is very different to the boxing we know today. The sport included fencing and cudgeling as well as the usual fist fighting. The first recorded boxing competition was between Christopher Monck and his butler with the latter winning the competition.
