Grandparents’ Day

Grandparents' Day

Grandparents’ Day is celebrated throughout the world and is a perfect time to cherish the relationship between grandchildren and their grandparents. It first began in America in 1969 when a schoolboy, Russell Capper, sent a letter to President Richard Nixon asking why there was a day dedicated to both his parents, but not to his beloved grandparents! Nixon’s secretary quickly wrote back, saying that the President loved the suggestion but could not create a new holiday without a ‘congressional resolution’. In 1977, Senator Randolph officially put the annual event before congress, arguing that it would help build relationships between the generations. On this day, children are encouraged to learn about the contributions older people have made to society and history and advocate for causes that improve their quality of life.
