Lauren Bacall’s Birthday (1924)

Lauren Bacall's Birthday (1924)

Lauren Bacall was born in The Bronx, New York in 1924 and started to model in early 1941. A theatre fanatic, Bacall also worked at The Stage Door Canteen as a waitress when she was young, a job that allowed her to be close to Broadway and get glimpses of the stars of the day! When the actress’ photo was featured on the front cover of Harper’s Bazaar, she caught the attention of Howard Hawks, one of the most iconic directors in Hollywood history. Hawks eventually cast the 19-year-old beauty in his romantic adventure The Haves and The Have Nots. Bacall made quite a splash, not least because her chemistry with the leading man, Humphrey Bogart, was palpable! Life imitated art and Bacall and Bogart married in 1945, joining forces again in moody film noirs like The Big Sleep and Key Largo. After success in comedies like How To Marry A Millionaire and the death of Bogart, Bacall began to move away from Hollywood. However, she would go on to receive two Tony awards for her work on stage and appeared occasionally in film up to her death in 2014.
