National Pizza Day

National Pizza Day

Today is National Pizza Day, a day to celebrate one of world’s favourite foods. But where did pizza come from? The first pizza is thought to have been made in Italy over 1000 years ago. It was a simple dish of flatbread topped with cheese and herbs. The first recorded mention of pizza was in a Latin text from Gaeta in Southern Italy in 997 AD. The text reads: “Neapolitans bake their bread under the ashes”.

However, it wasn’t until the late 1800s that pizza as we know it began to take shape. Italian immigrants brought their love of pizza to America, and soon pizzerias were popping up all over the country. Today, pizza is more popular than ever, with new toppings and styles being created all the time.

So, whether you like your pizza simple or loaded with toppings, today is the day to enjoy a slice (or two) in honour of National Pizza Day!
